GW 16 â scoring in 29 straight: Sirius defy the model
The Allsvenskan effectively has two tables right now. In the real one, IK Sirius lead with 41 points, 14 clear of Hammarby, and Halmstad sit bottom with 7. In the one built on expected points, Sirius would have 29.7 and Halmstad 14.1. Gameweek 16 is about what happens when reality and underlying numbers drift apart: the leaders are outperforming their model by more than eleven points while the bottom side undershoot theirs by seven.
Saturday opener: Ărgryte host AIK in the 108th meeting
The round opens at Gamla Ullevi where Ărgryte host AIK in the clubs' 108th Allsvenskan meeting since 1924. AIK lead the head-to-head with 39 wins to 35, and the points column reads 22 to 13. But the expected points column tells a different story: Ărgryte should have 16.5 points and AIK 16.1. The nine-point gap in the table is, statistically, barely a gap at all. Ărgryte have the league's lowest field tilt (0.37, the share of actions in the attacking third), while Michael Parker ranks fifth in the league for progressive ball transport at 109 metres forward per match. For AIK, Ăron Csongvai is fourth in the league for xT, expected threat created with on-ball actions, at 0.38 per match. And Ărgryte's Noah Christoffersson has scored 3 goals against AIK over the years.
MjÀllby vs Elfsborg: seven matches without a win
MjÀllby have gone seven straight matches without a win and have the league's weakest build-up: only 31 percent of attacks from their own third reach the final third. There are bright spots, chiefly Elliot Stroud, third in the league for xT at 0.49 per match. Elfsborg have history on their side with 14 wins to 6 across 27 Allsvenskan meetings since 1980, and an expected points tally of 19.8 that sits close to their actual 21.
Sunday's summit: Hammarby host HĂ€cken
Second against fourth at 3Arena. Hammarby have the league's highest field tilt (0.74) and the most box entries (20 per match). Paulos Abraham is second in the league's xG rankings at 0.59 per match, while HĂ€cken's Amor Layouni tops the xT rankings at 0.50. Both sides arrive in form: Hammarby unbeaten in four, HĂ€cken in three. Historically this fixture averages 3.1 goals per match. With Sirius 14 points clear, this is effectively a match about keeping the chase alive.
Malmö vs Degerfors: 21 straight scoring matches against eleven without a win
Malmö FF have scored in 21 straight matches and boast the league's best set-piece xG (0.21 expected goals from corners per match). Erik Botheim is fifth in the xG rankings at 0.56 per match. Degerfors arrive at Eleda on five straight defeats, eleven matches without a win, and with the league's lowest xG per match (0.87). The head-to-head record is brutal: Malmö have won 37 of 65 meetings since 1938. Anything but three points would be a sensation.
Underperformance Sunday: Göteborg, Kalmar, Halmstad and GAIS
Sunday's 16:30 kick-offs gather the league's most misleading points hauls. IFK Göteborg have 16 points where the model gives them 22.6, the biggest gap in the league after Halmstad's. Tobias Heintz is second in the xT rankings at 0.49. Kalmar, unbeaten in three, are also undershooting: 18 points against 22.7 expected, with Charles Sagoe Jr third in the assist rankings at 0.57 per match. At Ărjans Vall, bottom side Halmstad (7 points, 14.1 expected) face a GAIS side that is the league's most extreme pressing machine: best ball-regain threat in the league (0.52 xG within 8 seconds of winning the ball) and most balls won in the opposition half (40 per match). Halmstad post the league's weakest ball-regain threat (0.12 xG within 8 seconds of winning the ball) and, on top of that, the highest expected goals against (2.2 per match). GAIS's RĂłbert Frosti Ăorkelsson is fourth for shot assists at 2.5 per match. GAIS should, per the model, have 25.2 points instead of 20; against the league's bottom side, the theory gets its best possible test.
Monday finale: Sirius vs Brommapojkarna, DjurgÄrden travel to VÀsterÄs
Sirius have scored in 29 straight matches, won four in a row, and top both the league's xG (2.1 per match) and defensive numbers (1.0 xGA per match). That they are simultaneously outperforming their expected points by eleven is therefore not luck, it is efficiency stacked on top of already league-best underlying play. Robbie Ure tops the xG rankings at 0.63 per match. Brommapojkarna have scored in eight straight but are winless in six, with the league's fewest balls won in the opposition half (21) and the weakest set-piece xG. In the other Monday fixture, DjurgÄrden visit a VÀsterÄs side sitting seventh. DjurgÄrden have kept four straight clean sheets, won the last three meetings between the clubs, and have the league's best build-up (0.37). Kristian Lien, third in the xG rankings at 0.58, has scored 3 goals in 3 meetings with VÀsterÄs. The hosts' Ismet Lushaku is second in the assist rankings at 0.59 per match.
The question this round poses is uncomfortable for anyone who believes in regression: if Sirius keep scoring in every match, it does not matter that the model says 29.7. Tables are decided by goalscorers, not probabilities.
